Perimenopause: Understanding the Transition

By Dr. Beverly Huang, ND, MSCP
Perimenopause is a natural life stage that often arrives with more questions than answers. It can begin as early as the late 30s or early 40s, and yet many women are caught off guard when symptoms appear. At Grassroots, we believe women deserve clear, evidence-based guidance—so you can feel informed, supported, and empowered through this transition.
What Exactly Is Perimenopause?
Perimenopause refers to the years leading up to menopause, the point when menstruation has stopped for 12 consecutive months. During this time, hormone production—particularly estrogen and progesterone—becomes more erratic. Cycles may shorten or lengthen, ovulation may be irregular and symptoms can feel unpredictable. It really can feel like puberty backwards!
On average, perimenopause lasts four to ten years, though the duration varies widely. It is during this time that many women experience the most disruptive symptoms.
Common Symptoms to Watch For
While every woman’s experience is unique, some of the most common perimenopausal changes include:
-
Vasomotor symptoms: hot flashes, night sweats, and temperature dysregulation
-
Sleep disturbances: difficulty falling or staying asleep, often worsened by night sweats
-
Mood changes: increased anxiety, irritability, or depression, partly linked to fluctuating hormones
-
Menstrual cycle changes: lighter, heavier, shorter, or skipped periods
-
Cognitive shifts: “brain fog,” forgetfulness, or decreased concentration
-
Physical changes: weight redistribution, joint pain, or new onset headaches
Why Early Action Matters
Research shows that the perimenopausal years are a critical window for long-term health. Hormonal changes during this stage influence cardiovascular risk, bone health, metabolism, and cognitive function. Recognizing and addressing symptoms early is not just about improving quality of life—it’s about prevention.
Our approach integrates naturopathic care with evidence-based strategies from The Menopause Society. Whether it’s lifestyle interventions, nutritional support, or discussing the role of hormone therapy, we believe women deserve options tailored to their individual health goals.
You Don’t Have to Navigate Alone
Too many women are told their symptoms are “just stress” or that they need to “wait it out.” At Grassroots, we see perimenopause as an opportunity to intervene, reset, and protect your health for the decades ahead.
That’s why we created The Thrive Method—a 4-week guided program designed to help you understand your hormones, reclaim your energy, and build a foundation for long-term wellness.
